Dear all,

We are looking for a PhD student who is interested in submesoscale ocean dynamics and its relevance for the exchange of heat and energy between the ocean and the atmosphere. The PhD student will analyze simulations which resolve submesoscale dynamics in the North Atlantic and she or he will investigate the effect of these dynamics on the downward heat and energy flux. Furthermore, the PhD student will investigate the effect that parameterized submesoscale dynamics have in global coupled atmosphere-ocean simulations. The position is part of the theoretical oceanography group at Hamburg University with strong ties to the ICON modelling team at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Hamburg.

This PhD position is associated to the Collaborative Research Center TRR181 („Energy transfers in atmosphere and ocean“), which aims to develop and improve energetically consistent climate models. The successful candidates will benefit from regular project meetings, dedicated training courses, and ample opportunity for collaboration (including research stays) with our partners in northern Germany and abroad.

Best wishes,
Nils
