Postdoc position: Analysis of upper tropospheric cloud systems using a synergy of spaceborne observations and modeling
The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) offers a position for a scientist with PhD to analyse tropical upper tropospheric cloud systems and their environment, using a synergy of spaceborne observations and modeling. The goal is to create a comprehensive description of tropical convective systems and surrounding cirrus, needed to advance our understanding of their feedback to climate change.
- reconstruction and monitoring tropical upper tropospheric cloud systems and their environment by combining different satellite data (AIRS, IASI, TRMM, CALIPSO-CloudSat) and meteorological reanalysis (ERA5)
- analysis of this new climatological data base
- using a transport model to determine the origin of cirrus systems and to follow their evolution
- programming in fortran and python
- analysis of big data sets (satellite data and meteorological analysis)
- atmospheric science : dynamics and radiative transfer
LMD is one of the French leading institutes in atmospheric research and is part of the Institute Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL). With 150 persons, LMD consists of five scientific research groups. The proposed work will be executed within the group ABC(t) (Atmosphere-Biosphere-Climate by remote sensing), in collaboration with the groups EMC3 (Climate and climate change analysis and modelling) and DPAO (Dynamics and physics of the atmosphere and ocean).
The cloud system analysis concept allows to create a link between the properties of the anvils and convection. Recently we have determined the vertical structure of these systems by applying machine learning. The study of the cirrus cloud evolution is part of the TTL-Xing project (Asian Tropical Tropopause Layer: transport and composition), and will be in cooperation with Bernard Legras of LMD.
This work is also related to the national projects EECLAT (Expecting Earth-Care, Learning from A-Train) and IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer), financed by the French Space Agency CNES, and to the international program GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Exchanges), within the working group UTCC PROES (PROcess Evaluation Study on Upper Tropospheric Clouds & Convection, https://gewex-utcc-proes.aeris-data.fr.
Salary according to Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) standards
