The Research Associate will be responsible for analysing the data coming from multi-sensor instrument observations at the Chilbolton observatory that will be collected in 2021 and 2022. This will include multi-frequency Doppler radar observations with specific
focus at the newly-built 200 GHz radar. The successful candidate will develop novel retrieval algorithms for ice microphysics (including ice water content and characteristic size) and for light rain/drizzle (including Dm and N0) and then apply them to a variety
of datasets including the Chilbolton dataset and those coming from the most recent polar field campaigns recently conducted by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) mobile instrument facility.
This work will take place in an international collaborative framework between the University of Leicester, the University of Reading (PI: Dr. C. Westbrook) and RAL (PI: Dr. P. Huggard).
Candidates must hold a PhD in Earth Observation, Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, Meteorology, Environmental Science (or soon to be obtained) and must have computing skills appropriate to the programme of work. A robust publication record or potential for publication
and expertise in any of the following: radar/lidar, radiative transfer, optimal estimation retrieval, cloud microphysics, cloud/precipitation field campaign data analysis are highly desirable.
The two-year PDRA is expected to start as soon as possible.
Grade 7 £34,804 to £40,322 per annum
