Advisors: Pablo Zurita-Gotor and Álvaro de la Cámara.

A 2-year postdoc position is available at the Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics (UCM, Madrid) to work on sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) and stratosphere-troposphere dynamical coupling. SSWs are an emerging source of prediction skill in subseasonal-to-seasonal climate forecasts in Europe. However, many aspects concerning the ability of forecast systems to simulate the processes involved in the generation of SSWs remain poorly understood. In particular, the relative role and importance of tropospheric forcing versus stratospheric control on triggering SSW events is still a major unresolved scientific question; another unexplored aspect is the influence of parametrized gravity wave drag on the development of SSWs.

The candidate will address these questions performing targeted numerical experiments with a hierarchy of global models that, by design, will help isolate the different mechanisms responsible for the SSW generation. The exact details of the research to be conducted will depend on the candidate’s expertise and/or interests.

This position is funded by the Spanish Research Agency project DYNWARM (PID2019-109107GB-I00). Other scientists involved in the project: the research group STREAM, including Natalia Calvo, Marta Ábalos, Blanca Ayarzagüena, Ricardo García Herrera (UCM) and David Barriopedro (IGEO/CSIC), also Thomas Birner (Ludwig-Maximilians U. Munich), François Lott (LMD/ENS), Rolando García (NCAR).

Candidate’s profile:

Employment conditions

The position opens for two years, salary according to the UCM standards and depends on experience, it includes benefits (healthcare, social security, etc.).

Due to the international mobility restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, teleworking can be discussed.

Start date

September 2021 or as soon as possible.

Applications:

Applicants should send an e-mail to Pablo Zurita-Gotor (pzurita@ucm.es) and Álvaro de la Cámara (acamarai@ucm.es) including:

  1. A statement of research experience, qualifications and interests,

  2. A complete CV including a list of publications, and

  3. The name of at least two scientists who would agree to send a letter of recommendation.

We accept applications until the position is filled, but will give preference to applications received before 15 March 2021.
