The Fire Weather Research Laboratory and Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at San José State University, California is seeking applications for two Postdoctoral Research Associate positions available starting August 2020.

Position 1: Wildfire Remote Sensing with a focus on fuel moisture algorithm development using satellite-based products.

The goal of the project is to develop improved tools for monitoring fuel moisture content of live woody and herbaceous fuels in California. The project will validate current techniques used and develop new live fuel moisture content (LFMC) tools to better assess fire danger using state-of-the-science remote sensing data sets. These tools will be developed using new high-resolution data from various satellite products eventually leading to a dataset and methodology to incorporate these tools into new fire behavior modeling systems. The post-doctoral position is part of the new Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC) at SJSU and the candidate will interact regularly with the seven faculty associated with the WIRC. The position is available for up to two years based on satisfactory performance in the first year.

Position 2: Fire Weather Climatology and Reanalysis

The goal of this position is to conduct analyses using a high-resolution 30-year Weather, Research and Forecasting (WRF) model output to better understand decadal trends in critical fire weather patterns associated with extreme fire danger in California, evaluate current fire weather indices and develop new index tools specific for utility management. The analyses will also be aimed at the seasonal to sub-seasonal predictability of fire weather conditions. The post-doctoral position is part of the new Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC) at SJSU and the candidate will interact regularly with the seven faculty associated with the WIRC. The position is offered for one year initially, but is renewable for an additional year based on performance evaluation.
