Are you a scientist passionate about using your expertise to advise the Government's climate policies? We are looking for someone with your skills!

The BEIS Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy (SICE) Directorate is recruiting specialists into its Climate Science Team. These positions will support the Mitigation, International and Greenhouse Gas Inventory workstreams, including work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and core deliverables under the UK Climate Change Act (2008). The Climate Science Team is responsible for advising colleagues across Government on specialist topics including the climate system, emissions pathways, climate risks, bioenergy and geo-engineering. We are a friendly, fun and encouraging team, with a focus on personal and professional development and ensuring a good work/life balance!

Four Higher Scientific Officer roles are available.

The role in the International Workstream will:

  • Support our engagement with the IPCC, including coordination of input into IPCC Task Groups, Special Reports and Assessment Reports
  • Provide advice on climate science in support of wider UK climate objectives, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s COP26 and the domestic 2050 net zero target
  • Assist the commissioning and contract management of research projects and grants

The Greenhouse Gas Inventory Workstream roles will:

  • Provide technical advice on emissions reporting under the United Nations Paris Agreement Rulebook, including reviewing post-2020 Greenhouse Gas Emissions targets and Nationally-Determined Contributions.
  • Manage the transition for reporting GHG Emissions to the EU following exit from European Union.
  • Give technical advice relating to the adoption of the latest scientific advice into the UK's international and domestic greenhouse gas reporting.

The role within the Mitigation Workstream will:

  • Maintain a detailed evidence base and provide advice on technical issues related to the development and deployment of Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) technologies
  • Assist with scoping, launch, appraisal and running of an innovation competition to bring forward credible, large-scale GGR technologies in the UK
