PhD opportunity in Trieste, Italy in the topic of "Organization of Tropical Convection"

A funded PhD opportunity is available hosted at the ICTP (Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics) within the ESFM PhD programme of the university of Trieste to work on the topic of "Organization of Tropical Convection" under the supervision of  Adrian Tompkins starting in November 2020.

Applications must be made directly to the University of Trieste by the deadline of June 17th 2020. Details of the application process are available here

Abstract: A topical open question in tropical meteorology is how the organisation of convection, from the mesoscale organisation of thunderstorms through larger-scale phenomena such as cyclones, the Madden Julian Oscillation and the inter-tropical convergence zone may change in future climates. Changes in the dynamics of convection alter the cloud and water vapour distribution and impact the radiative budget, impacting climate sensitivity. This project will aim to further understanding of the physical processes that determine the spatial distribution of tropical convection such as coldpool dynamics and the interaction with the radiation, and how this may change in the context of increased temperatures. The project may use a range of analysis tools and data that could include idealized mathematical models, 3D models of the atmosphere using convective-permitting or even eddy resolving spatial resolutions in idealized frameworks, global climate models, and the wealth of satellite observations now available. The candidate should have a background in meteorology, physics or mathematics, and preferably have some experience in programming (e.g. C++, Fortran, python).

Please feel free to contact me directly (tompkins@ictp.it) for further details of the project.
