The Institute of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences

 Dynamic Meteorology group, at

the University of Innsbruck seeks a

University Assistant / Postdoc

Boundary Layer Dynamics

The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to current and future research projects by supporting and conducting a major experimental activity in the area of boundary layer dynamics in complex terrain. In coordination with the group head (Mathias Rotach), s/he will also be encouraged to develop her/his own research topic within the general field of activities of the group. The main task of the successful candidate will be the preparation and expansion of the i-Box, a boundary layer research infrastructure in complex terrain, in view of the upcoming TEAMx joint international field experiment, which partly will take place in and around the i-Box. Correspondingly, development and refinement of experimental approaches using advanced atmospheric data – to support progress in our understanding of turbulent flow and exchange processes in complex terrain – will be the main focus of this position.

Regular duties include teaching at undergraduate (B.Sc.) and/or graduate (M.Sc.) levels as well as research training for PhD students in the group (in certain job specification systems the job description would correspond to an assistant professor level without tenure track). Candidates with strong background in the experimental exploration of boundary layer processes and experience with sophisticated measurement techniques are especially encouraged to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric science or a related field; experience in experimental methods for boundary layer meteorology; knowledge in mountain meteorology/climatology advantageous; knowledge and experience in scientific programming, background in atmospheric processes in complex terrain, experience in project management and field activities; experience and/or interest in university level teaching; strong verbal and written communication skills are required (knowledge of German is a great advantage). Independence, strong problem-solving skills, and an ability to work efficiently as part of a team are essential.

SALARY: Salary is determined by the salary system of the University of Innsbruck and can be commensurate with professional qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. In addition, the rules of the Austrian employment law apply.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: The position is offered for 4 years, starting as soon as possible.

HOW TO APPLY: the opening is published at the university’s job portal, under (search for the identification GEO-11268). (Please note that the job portal has a fixed period of 6 weeks, for which the position is ‘open’ (visible) – if you don’t find it, please use the contact address below).

In your applications please include a cover letter with a concise description of your research experience and objectives, your CV, and the names and contact information of potential referees. Applications received before July 4 2020 will receive full consideration.

The University of Innsbruck aims at increasing the proportion of women on its faculty, and therefore applications by qualified women are especially encouraged.
