The Institute for Environmental Physics (IUP) of the University of Bremen is searching for suitable candidates to apply for a

Technical - scientific staff position (f/m/d)

The position is permanent and the remuneration is up to and including grades in the band E14 TV-L depending on qualification * (100%),

in the field of

"Scientific Computing/HPC".

The University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of women in the technical establishment and therefore expressly encourages women to apply.

The Department "Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere" of the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP, http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de) of the University of Bremen conducts international research in the field of satellite remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases (climate, air pollution, ozone chemistry). The IUP is involved in a large number of national and European projects in which the data of existing and future satellites play a central role. High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and their big data-enabled storage elements are indispensable components for the evaluation of satellite data. We are therefore looking for an experienced IT expert (w/m/d) in the field of HPC/Big Data, who will have the following responsibilities and skills:

  • Support/operation of the high-performance computer systems and their peripherals including data storage of the department led by Professor J. P. Burrows as well as documentation and assurance of the IT objectives set by the management

  • Deputy Head of the IT/Computer Group in the Department led by Professor J. P. Burrows FRS.

  • Development of evaluation methods and software as well as visualization for scientific applications

  • Independent research and publication of articles in scientific journals in the field of applied numerical/big data/earth observation etc. and relevant teaching duties

  • Application/procurement of new high-performance computer systems and their peripherals, as well as active acquisition of third-party funds

  • Training of young scientists in programming with a view to parallelizing and optimal use of modern HPC and (big data) storage systems

  • Collaboration with HPC/IT employees in IUP departments and those with relevant infrastructure outside the IUP

  • Preparing applications to external data centers

  • Member of relevant organization committees in the field of HPC and research data management

  • Medium-term establishment and management of a group for the entire institute in the field of HPC/Scientific computing and research data

*In the case of appointment grouping below E 14, the tasks to be assigned will be appropriately adapted.



Requirements:

A university degree (uni-diploma/master) in computer science, mathematics or physics. Very good knowledge and several years of relevant professional experience in at least two of the following areas:

  • Architecture of modern HPC systems (focus on cluster systems) and storage

  • Sehr gute Programmierkenntnisse in einem breiten Bereich (Programmiersprachen: z. B. Fortran77-2008, C, C++)

  • Good knowledge of paradigms/standards: Message-Passing and OpenMP.

  • very good knowledge of spoken and written German (CEF-Level C1)

  • good knowledge of spoken and written English (CEF-Level-B2)

  • a good understanding of data management for research

Furthermore, the applicant should have the following skills

  • Good communication

  • Organizational capacity capability

  • to work well in a team

  • and an independent working style

Dependent on work load, the successful candidate will also support other IUP departments in consultation with the institute management. The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a good working atmosphere and attractive equipment as well as direct integration into international research.

General notes:

Priority is given to severely disabled applicants if they have essentially the same professional and personal aptitude. Applications from people with a migrant background are welcome.
