At the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute ( KNMI) the department Research and Development of Weather and Climate models (RDWK) investigates and develops models and applications for weather and air quality predictions and climate scenarios. We work on detailed physical processes, data assimilation, long term climate projections and practical applications including storm surge forecasts and statistics of extremes. The aviation services that KNMI provides consist of operating and maintaining the meteorological infrastructure of civil controlled airports in The Netherlands, providing observations, forecasts, warnings, consultation and advisories. It also includes development and innovation to continuously improve these services. The emphasis of the work is on improving our weather forecasts for low clouds, poor visibility and strong wind. These are weather conditions strongly and negatively influencing aviation. KNMI uses the state-of-the-art weather and climate model HARMONIE-AROME for weather forecasting. We contribute to the further development of this model within the European consortium Hirlam. HARMONIE-AROME is especially important for the prediction of dangerous and extreme weather, like heavy precipitation, wind gusts and low visibility. We have two temporary vacancies to further improve and develop the HARMONIE model . Please send in your resume and application via the link below
