Shanghai Typhoon Institute (STI) of China Meteorological Administration, established in 1978, is a national-level institute specialized in tropical cyclone (TC) research in China. The mission of STI is to undertake basic and applied research of TC, marine meteorology, numerical weather prediction and other related fields so as to meet the demand of meteorological disaster risk reduction and the economic development.

Since its establishment, STI has taken the lead in China in a number of research projects on TCs, in compiling the TC best-track and Annual Books, carrying out field experiments for landfall TCs, development of regional numerical weather prediction system and marine weather forecasting system. STI is also active in international cooperation activities. The international projects led by STI include the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Landfall Forecast Demonstration Project (TLFDP), the UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee cross-cutting project “Experiment on Typhoon Intensity Change in Coastal Area” (EXOTICCA), and so on. STI is striving to enhance its capability to become a world class research center for tropical cyclone, marine meteorology, and numerical weather prediction.
