Research scientist (m, w, div) for modelling atmospheric processes

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig (Germany) is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

The task of the holder of the position will be to carry out model studies and to develop and extend model parameterizations for the investigation of cloud processes and aerosol-cloud interactions on different scales. The new ICON atmosphere model will be used for the model studies. It is expected that the holder of the position will independently acquire and carry out projects funded by third parties and will also take over tasks of supervision for young scientists.

The position requires a PhD in meteorology, experience in numerical modelling and experience in the use of modern methods for model evaluation using remote sensing measurements and forward operators.

Very good knowledge of UNIX/Linux and shell script programming, programming skills in higher programming languages (ideally FORTRAN) as well as the use of analysis and visualization software (e.g. CDO, Python) are required. Advanced knowledge in the use of server-based computer structures and high-performance computers (e.g. Mistral at DKRZ) is also required. Experience in handling the ICON model and the scientific exploitation of ICON data is an advantage. Preliminary work on scientific analysis techniques that allow the characterization of cloud properties, e.g. object-based analyses or Lagrangian observation methods, is desirable. Very good written and spoken English skills are required.

Start of work is 01.06.2020.

We offer you an exciting job with a diversified activity in an interdisciplinary work environment and a wide range of career and family options as well as flexible working hours and day care places.
