Dear MetJobs List users,

one funded PhD position with contract is opening at the Department of Atmospheric Physics at Charles University in PragueCzech Republic aiming at high resolution street-scale modelling with LES Models.

The position will be available from January 2021. We will offer a job position starting in October 2020 to the successful candidate. The applicants will enter the Ph.D. study program in October 1, 2020.
The position will be primarily connected to the development and use of LES models (specifically PALM-4U) for the simulations of street-scale conditions within the real urban environment.

The successful candidate will join the team responsible for model development, evaluation and scenario simulations of urban environment in high resolution with PALM-4U, an open source LES model. The contribution of the PhD student will be an improvement of the current urban surface module of the PALM-4U model, testing of the model performance in real situations and production and evaluation of urban planning scenarios. The candidate will also contribute to the comparison of LES and Gaussian modelling approaches.
The position will be fulfilled within the project of the Czech Technological Agency (in the framework of the Norwegian grants call) – TURBAN: Turbulent-resolving urban modeling of air quality and thermal comfort. The successful candidate will join a young and ambitious research team at DAP FMP in Prague and within the project will collaborate with Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Hydrometeorological Institute and Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre in Norway. Ph.D. of the candidates will be fully funded, partly from the mentioned project and partly as a regular monthly stipendium with net income starting at 1000 EUR/month (+the stipendium is gradually increased during the study – for details, please see and

1) Master-of-Science-equivalent degree in meteorology and/or environmental physics with fulfilled courses of climatology, climate dynamics, atmospheric physics (focus on cloud and precipitation physics)
2) The candidate should have good to very good experience in Unix / Linux working environments and programming skills in Python or R, and Fortran.
3) Strong communication in English language (spoken and written)
4) Willingness to interact with an interdisciplinary science community
5) A creative mind-set for scientific research
