  • Do you have a master’s or PhD in meteorology or hydrology?

  • Are you interested in applying your academic skills in a commercial insurance environment?

  • Are you legally authorised to work in the US and want to work in the Raleigh-Durham (NC) area? (bonus points if you already live there!!)

If the answer to the 3 questions above is yes (please note US work authorisation is essential), then I would like you to consider working as an R&D Associate for one of my clients. They are an independent, entrepreneurial and fast growing commercial insurance broker with operations on both sides of the Atlantic (incl 5 offices in the US, Bermuda and London with 150+ staff). They can offer a fast paced, dynamic work environment with plenty of fun. They provide commercial insurance broking services for companies - ie they provide broking for insurance companies looking to purchase reinsurance against natural disasters. For example, they help Floridian insurers take out reinsurance cover against GoM hurricanes above a pre-defined limit.

They have a number of offices in the US, both East and West Coast (incl NYC, Stamford and the midWest) and their Raleigh-Durham office is their in-house tech/software development hub. They provide specialised catastrophe modelling and financial modelling software for their clients, and this office employs both software developers as well as researchers with expertise of specific natural hazards (eg earthquake, flood, weather etc). Their current team leader is an expert in EQ and would like to complement the team by bringing in some expertise in meteorology or hydrology. Your role will include both model validation and model development for their proprietary models, as well as evaluation of 3rd party models (ie models provided by software vendors that offer catastrophe modelling services). In particular they are looking for someone who will develop deep understanding of risk assessment results, assumptions and limitations with 3rd party vendor and non-3rd party vendor models. You can expect close interaction with the software engineering team (although please note this is not a software development role) as well as clients of the broking firm (ie insurance companies seeking to purchase reinsurance cover as mentioned above). You will thus need to have good communication skills, specifically the ability to communicate analytical ideas with multiple audiences, some of whom may not have a strong analytical background. You will also need to be able to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment. Please note that insurance experience is NOT essential, although any private sector experience is very welcome.

Math/Stat/Computing skills required:

  • Expertise in Statistical/Probabilistic Risk Modeling is a must
  • High level of proficiency in data analysis and data manipulation software tools (including SQL, Excel)
  • Proficient programming skills in Python, R, or similar
  • Knowledge of GIS preferred, ideally experience with ArcGIS  (other GIS software ok)

Base salary ~80-90k USD, with a full package incl healthcare etc. Discretionary bonus as well, which will be dependent on firm performance. Immediate need. The client is very passionate about diversity and we encourage you to apply if you feel you meet the requirements.

Application Process:

Please send CV and cover letter to me (I am a 3rd party search firm) by email, with subject line “R&D Associate Raleigh”. Please confirm your US work status (if you are not a US citizen).
