MeteoSwiss and EUMETSAT searching for a talented
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow
in the area of
Seamless Artificially Intelligent Thunderstorm Nowcasts
Starting from 2021, Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) will significantly enhance the current imaging service by improving the spatial, temporal and spectral resolution. MTG will also include a new Lightning Imager and a state-of-the-art atmospheric sounding service.
This fellowship will be located at MeteoSwiss and exploits this potential to improve warnings of severe convection. The project is driven by specific requirements from operational weather forecasting, air traffic control, civil protection and the general public. The hazards of severe convective storms include hail, heavy rain, gale-force wind gusts, lightning, tornadoes and flash floods. They cause each year large damage and impact personal health and safety. The fellowship aims at producing seamless hazard-specific nowcasts of the initiation and evolution of thunderstorms by exploiting satellite observations in combination with ground-based radar and lightning data, NWP model forecasts and advanced artificial intelligence. The fellowship builds on existing methods and results from recent research projects based on a large archive of multi-sensor thunderstorm biographies.
The fellowship is offered for one year, with possibility of extension for up to two additional years.
The working place is in the beautiful Locarno-Monti in Southern Switzerland.
