Cloud Optical Depth, defined as the optical thickness between the
top and the bottom of a cloud, is of great interest in several
fields such as climate studies, solar energy forecasting or free
space optical communication. Yet, to date, Cloud Optical Depth is
a poorly observed climate variable. Several instruments and
methods can be used to measure Cloud Optical Depth from the ground
but there is a need for more accurate and automatic measurements.
Those instruments include passive instrument such as photometers
imagers and active instrument such as cloud radar or Lidar.
Identify, implement and compare Cloud Optical Depth retrieval
methods both from passive (e.g. sky imager) and active (e.g.
More specifically, your activities will be concerning :
• A review of literature of existing methods for measuring Cloud Optical Depth from the ground
• Implementation and meticulous testing of the identified methods on measurement datasets that may include visible/thermal sky imagers, ground based LIDAR, cloud radar, etc.
• Writing a detailed report of your developments.
Bachelor/Master of Science in one of the following fields:
Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Optics, Computer Science.
Familiarity with Lidar data would be a plus.Experience with one or more of the following tools would be a plus: Python, shell scripting.
The intern will be based in Reunion Island (St Denis).
