Title: Researcher (operative urban air quality model development)

Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) is both an international research institute and a 24/7 operational weather service located in Helsinki, Finland. It currently employs over 300 full time researchers working on weather and climate, atmospheric composition, high latitude and polar oceans, and cryosphere.


The Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling Group is seeking for an enthusiastic researcher for projects related to using and developing air quality modelling software (EnFuser). EnFuser-model is specifically targeting urban air quality and has been used for operative air quality forecasts in Helsinki area for two years already (see: We are also utilizing and further developing EnFuser-model in several international projects (eg. in India and China).

This position suits a person who is looking for new challenges and has the determination, scientific mind and technical skills to conquer them. This person should have a natural desire for improving and developing systems, and a talent in seeking creative solutions. Poor air quality is a significant global issue – are you the one to join us and make a difference in this field?  


Key responsibilities

  • installing and using the EnFuser-model
  • participating in the development of the EnFuser-model
  • handling user requests, questions and training sessions related to EnFuser
  • participate in scientific publishing related to EnFuser


Qualifications for applicants

Candidates must have at least a M.Sc. in a relevant field (e.g. computer science, physics, mathematics or other related field). Furthermore, a successful candidate must meet the following essential criteria:

  • experience with either Windows or Linux platforms
  • good knowledge of programming  with Java, or excellent knowledge of Python/C#/C++
  • overall strong experience in working with computers and data processing
  • good communication and organizational skills
  • ability to work independently and  as a part of a team
  • written and spoken fluency in English, and willingness to work internationally
  • at least basic understanding of atmospheric physics and chemistry
  • experience on data analysis
  • at least basic skills in statistics
