Within the La Caixa INPHINIT doctoral program, we are offering a PhD opportunity at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center on high-resolution climate model data analysis and climate impacts
Climate events, and in particular climate extremes such as heat waves, drought or heavy precipitation, can have substantial impacts on our society, infrastructure and economic activities. To better understand and prepare for such impacts, climate information of highest quality is needed. Climate model simulations are typically used to predict climate variations, including extremes, and possible climate impacts for the upcoming seasons, years and even decades in relation to climate change. These climate models, however, do not perfectly capture the real-world climate, partly because they operate at coarse resolutions at which key processes are not resolved.
Climate simulations at higher resolutions have recently become available, from both global and regional climate models. This project will comprehensively assess these high-resolution simulations regarding their representation of impact-relevant weather and climate events, and explore the added value in comparison to lower resolution simulations. The project will further explore relationships between climate events and socio-economic impact data for example related to energy production and other sectors. These activities should include novel applications of Artificial Intelligence to characterize relationships within the climate system, and between climate events and impacts.
This research will be carried out within the Earth Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which is one of the world leaders in the development of climate prediction applications and climate services. The successful applicant will be hosted conjointly by the Climate Prediction Group and the Earth System Service Group, and will benefit from the IT support of the Computational Earth Sciences Group within the Earth Sciences Department.
