Post-doctoral scientist position at the UCLouvain, Belgium: Modelling sea level variations over the past millennium.

Global mean sea level has risen over the past century by about 15 cm. Reconstructions covering the past millennia allow putting those recent changes in a wider context. However, the contribution of thermal expansion, melting of glaciers and of ice sheets to those changes is highly uncertain. The goal of the project is to estimate all those components using different physical models and to check if the sum of those contributions is compatible with existing reconstructions.

In this framework, the Earth and Life Institute of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium invites applications for the following position:

Post-doctoral researcher

Starting date between May 1 2020 and July 1, 2020
Full time position for 24 months
Net monthly salary: 2300-2500 € (depending on seniority -
this includes social insurances)
Location: Earth and Life Institute, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium

The candidates must not have spent more than 2 years in Belgium over the last 3 years and should not have obtained their PhD more than 6 years before the starting date of the grant.

The successful candidate will analyse the results of simulations performed with climate models, a glacier model and ice sheet models in order to estimate the main contributions to sea level changes over the past millennium. The model results will be compared to observations both at global scale and regionally to determine their compatibility and describe the processes at the origin of the observed changes. The results of this model-data comparison may also lead to the design of new simulations to identify the potential causes of the discrepancies.

Required qualifications:

- To have a PhD in climatology, Earth science or related field (physics, informatics) with previous experience in Earth science;
- To have published in peer-reviewed international journals;
- To have strong experience in
programming and in managing large data sets;
- To have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in English;
- To have interest in working in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Applicants should send via e-mail to Hugues Goosse (hugues.goosse@uclouvain.be) (i) a statement of research experience, qualification and interest, (ii) a complete CV including a list of publications, and (iii) the name of two scientists who would agree to send a letter of recommendation

Review of the applications will start February 10 and the call is open until the position is filled.
