The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and internationally renowned for excellent research on aerosol and clouds. In the Modelling Department, we invite applications for are a PhD research project:
Marine organic aerosol and the impact on Arctic clouds
within the Collaborative Research Center TR172 ‘ArctiC Amplification: Climate Relevant Atmospheric and SurfaCe Processes, and Feedback Mechanisms (AC)³’ (www.ac3-tr.de), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Within (AC)3, scientists at five national partner research institutions (Universities of Leipzig, Cologne and Bremen, TROPOS and Alfred Wegener Institute) aim to better observe, understand, and simulate processes leading to the current drastic climate changes in the Arctic.
The PhD project aims to study marine organic aerosol and its impact on mixed-phase Arctic clouds using global and regional aerosol-climate modelling and observations. The Arctic is warming more rapidly than any other region on Earth. The long-term decline in Arctic sea ice can have important but as yet unquantified impacts on the aerosol forcing on Arctic climate. The question to investigate is whether the sea ice retreat will lead to an increase in oceanic aerosol production that can modulate the rapid Arctic warming through aerosol-cloud interactions? Aerosol life cycle and clouds in the Arctic, however, are still among the largest challenges for current climate models. The project, therefore, will use new satellite products and field measurements to evaluate and improve the representation of clouds and aerosol with focus on marine organic matter and its cloud-nucleating properties. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the Leipzig Institute for Meteorological, University of Leipzig.
The applicant must have a University Master degree in meteorology, (atmospheric) physics, mathematics or related environ-mental sciences, and strong programming skills. The PhD student will be expected to present the results at international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory. Experience in aerosol research and atmospheric modelling is of advantage.

The position will be filled as soon as possible and is awarded for 3 years, with possible extension to four years. We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team and a wide range of career and family options as well as flexible working hours and children’s day care places. In addition, there is the opportunity to join the lively Leipzig Graduate School on Clouds, Aerosol and Radiation.
The employment is temporary and includes a part-time position of 26 hours/week. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (65% TV-L 13) including the attractive social benefits of the public sector.
