Declining insect numbers are a key manifestation in biodiversity loss over Europe. Quantitative data is necessary to better understand the magnitude of the decline, it spatial pattern and its drivers. Weather radar has been shown in earlier studies to allow for remote sensing of airborne insects.

The proposed PhD project at the Institute for Meteorology at the University of Leipzig (https://research.uni-leipzig.de/climate) will be carried out in collaboration with biodiversity experts at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig (https://www.idiv.de) and radar experts at the Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research (https://www.tropos.de).

The Institute for Meteorology, University of Leipzig thus seeks an excellent and motivated candidate for a

PhD position (50 to 75% TvL E13) for three years, starting 1 March 2020 or soon thereafter

Requirements:

Master in Meteorology, Remote sensing, or related field. Programming skills (Linux, Fortran, Python). Experience with remote sensing or atmospheric modelling is of advantage.

Please send your application including a detailed CV and a motivation letter until 31 December 2019 to johannes.quaas@uni-leipzig.de.
