About the role

Satellite remote sensing of greenhouse gases (GHG) CO2 and CH4 is an important research area that has the potential to transform the field of carbon cycle science by providing us with global observations on their sources and sinks and how they change with time. This information will be essential for development of reliable forecasts of the future state of the global carbon and methane budgets and climate and it will also provide us with a means for independent verification of GHG emissions supporting the international efforts to reduce fossil carbon emissions such as the Paris Agreement of the UNFCCC. 

We are seeking a Research Associate with a strong background in satellite remote sensing to work on advancing greenhouse gas retrieval methods to the Chinese TanSat and the NASA OCO-2 CO2 missions and to support the development of the upcoming CNES/UK MicroCarb CO2 satellite mission. Specifically, you will work on simulation experiments and apply retrieval methods to current missions to infer global datasets of atmospheric CO2 which will be evaluated against ground-based observations and used to assess model calculations. You will work closely with the satellite missions teams and contribute to the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI+).

About you

With a PhD in a relevant area, you will have a proven record of working in collaborative projects and of completing those projects and their research in a timely manner. You will also have expertise in retrieval methods and radiative transfer modelling, alongside remote sensing and atmospheric science. With a good publication record and potential for future publications you will have excellent time management and problem solving skills. You will have expertise in programming in languages including Fortran, python and shell.
