The Earth Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center invites applications for a PhD scholarship related to exploring added value in high-resolution global and regional climate simulations.

Climate events, and in particular climate extremes such as heat waves, droughts or heavy precipitation, can have substantial impacts on society, infrastructure, economic activities and ecosystems. To better understand and prepare for such impacts, climate information of highest quality are needed. Climate model simulations are typically used to predict climate variations and extremes and possible impacts for the upcoming seasons, years or in relation to climate change. These climate models, however, do not perfectly capture the real-world climate, partly because they operate at coarse resolutions at which key processes are not resolved.

Climate simulations at higher resolutions have recently become available, from both global and regional climate models (e.g. CMIP6 HighResMIP, PRIMAVERA, CORDEX). This project will comprehensively assess these high-resolution simulations regarding their representation of impact-relevant weather and climate situations, explore added value in comparison to lower resolution simulations, and refine predictions and projections of future climate evolution based on the improved representation of relevant features. The project will also explore ways to capitalise on this improved representation to improve climate services for the agricultural and energy sectors.

Applications need to be submitted before 7th November 2020 through the portal of the Spanish Ministry for Science, Innovation and Universities:  , specifying the project reference SEV-2015-0493-19-1 ("Environment climate change air pollution")
