A trend observed within the current shift towards large-scale integration of renewables into electricity grids currently concerns up-scaling the solar farms into large PV arrays. This poses a challenge for continental grid managers, as large amounts of PV-power production are concentrated at specific locations, fluctuating as the local cloud cover varies. In situations when a sudden power drop occurs, mitigation strategies are becoming crucial to avoid putting at risks the grid under unsafe operation.
One emergent approach for such tasks is to predict the future power output according to the forecasted solar irradiance to be received by the plant. This allows for the producers to optimize their production according to the most cost-effective integration scenarios, and on the other hand allowing the grid operators for more flexibility to perform well-informed grid management decisions.
Reuniwatt provides a range a solar forecasting services covering temporal horizons down from the minute up to the 24hrs-scale. For the next minutes ahead, Reuniwatt’s product InstaCast bases its forecasts on all-sky cameras for predicting the local irradiance, inferring the cloud cover either in the visible or the thermal-infrared wavebands. As solar plants get larger, a single camera may become limiting in terms of spatial-coverage where multiple cameras could become useful to enhance the forecasting skill of the overall system.


You will be working on Reuniwatt’s next generation very short-term forecasting system using a set of multiple synchronized cameras.


More specifically, your activities will be concerning:
•    A review of literature of existing methods for providing power forecasts using stereoscopy,
•    Implementation and meticulous testing of the identified methods,
•    Benchmarking your solution against Reuniwatt’s standard method,
•    Writing a detailed report of your developments.


Bachelor/Master of Science in one of the following fields: Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics.


We are looking for a skilled and motivated intern interested in atmospheric science, computer programming and renewable energies.

Familiarity with computer vision, time-series forecasting or solar plant modelling would be considered an asset.

Experience with one or more of the following tools would be a plus: Python, shell scripting.


The intern will be based in Reunion Island (St Pierre).


6 months beginning in 1st quarter of 2020.


€700 raw/month (~€650/month), 1 round-trip flight ticket to Reunion Island.

In France, an internship has more legal constraints than in some other countries. A contract between the company, the intern, and a university must be established. Thus, the intern MUST be enrolled student at a university.
