Research Scientist – Data Scientist

 

Besides MetService being New Zealand’s National Meteorological Service, it’s a successful global weather company. MetService is a technology-based organisation employing about 300 staff and headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand.

 

New Zealand's meteorological challenges are unique. Our lovely island country is narrow and mountainous, situated approximately half-way between the Equator and the South Pole. A lot of the time, New Zealand's weather results from the passage of mid-latitude weather systems. The rugged terrain influences the atmospheric flow; there can be large west-east differences in rainfall, temperature, etc., over short distances; likewise, the hills hugely influence the winds. In the summer months, cyclones from the South Pacific tropics can pass close by. And in the winter, we occasionally experience polar outbreaks. As far as the weather is concerned, there is never a dull moment.

 

We have a great opportunity in our Forecast Research and Development team for someone enthusiastic about machine/deep learning (ML/DL) and statistical analysis.

 

If you are excited about participating in the meteorological application of statistical and machine/deep learning methods, and the development of operational systems, then this might be you.

We are seeking a Research Scientist having:

                     An honours degree or above in mathematics or physics (postgraduate qualifications preferred)

                     Knowledge of probabilistic statistical forecasting techniques and/or ML/DL

                     Familiarity with Linux, Amazon Web Services, high-performance computing; or, other experience with running operational forecasting systems

                     Solid software development skills (e.g. in Python, Julia) and experience in ML/DL libraries (e.g., Scikit-Learn, Flux.jl, TensorFlow)

                     The ability to communicate technical ideas to non-scientific audiences

 

Also, having experience with dynamical atmospheric modelling (e.g., WRF), meteorological observation, and climatological data sets would be an advantage.

 

We would also consider candidates without some of the desired experience for a Junior Research Scientist position.
