Context:

Photovoltaic (PV) production forecasting essentially consists of predicting the cloud cover, and subsequently solar irradiance at ground level, at a given site. Geostationary meteorological satellites, such as Meteosat or GOES, allow real-time observation of clouds by producing an image every 5-15 minutes. The comparative analysis of successive images makes it possible to predict the behaviour of cloud structures in the next hours and the power of solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface.

Objective:

Next generation of weather satellites offer new cloud products which could be useful to improve our solar irradiance estimation and forecasting algorithms. The goal of this internship is to evaluate the impact of these products on our algorithms and conceive new forecasting methods. To do so, the intern will work closely together with Reuniwatt’s experts in data science and remote sensing.

Specific tasks:

-    Analyse bibliography about satellite-based solar irradiance estimation and forecasting
-    Adapt current forecasting methods to new cloud products
-    Take advantage of our database of cloud products to improve our models (particularly, a Deep Learning model could be tested)
-    Evaluate the impact of different clear sky models
-    Write documentation describing the developed tools and the obtained results.

Qualifications:

Bachelor/Master of Science in one of the following fields: Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Applied Mathematics.

Skills:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated intern interested in atmospheric science, remote sensing and renewable energies.
Experience with one or more of these tools would be a plus: Python, R, C/C++, shell scripting.
Fluent in English or French

Location:

The intern will be based in Reunion Island (St Pierre).

Duration:

6 months beginning as soon as possible.

Compensation:

€700 raw/month (~€650/month), 1 round-trip flight ticket to Reunion Island.

In France, an internship has more legal constraints than in some other countries. A contract between the company, the intern, and a university must be established. Thus, the intern MUST be enrolled student at a university.
