Senior Scientist starting salary £36,684 with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £40,352 pa*

 *Salary quoted is based on full-time salary (37 hours) and 27.5 days annual leave and 8 bank holidays. Employees can buy or sell up to 5 days leave if full-time or for part-time staff up to their weekly contracted hours.

If the answers is yes then an exciting opportunity has arisen for creative researchers to join the Met Office and work in air quality research.

The Met Office is a world-leading weather and climate service. Technology and science go hand-in-hand as key elements in driving our success and delivering world leading services and advice. The Atmospheric Dispersion and Air Quality (ADAQ) strategic area within Weather Science is responsible for developing models and the science related to air quality and other forms of atmospheric contamination. The work within the group is highly varied, ranging from core atmospheric physics and composition though to specific subject matter areas in air quality, radiological, biological and volcanology. Model performance, presentation of the outputs and their interpretation are also vitally important, especially when applied in protecting life, and so the work includes wider capability developments, analysis, validation and presentation activities.

The Met Office has a long history of undertaking a wide range of composition science, ranging from observations to modelling of climate and short time scales and forecasting. As part of this the Met Office is responsible for the delivery of the UK national air quality forecast on behalf of Defra. A core responsibility of ADAQ is the development, application and validation of air quality models and their pull through to use in the operational forecast and other policy support work. Within this, there is a need to both develop specific elements of the sciences while also bringing multiple disciplines and capability together from across the entire field and community of air quality from emissions to impacts.
Work in the air quality area is highly collaborative with a need to engage with a wide range of Met Office colleagues, academics and UK government researchers from across the entire spectrum of fields involved in air quality.

The Met Office is seeking candidates to participate in the development of the Met Office air quality modelling and analysis capability. The successful candidate will be innovative, flexible, enjoy collaborating and motivated by seeing science developed and applied in tackling real world air quality challenges.


Job Purpose:

  • To perform research and development leading to improved air quality modelling and contributing to the creation of a wider UK community air quality analysis capability.
  • To play a leading role in delivery of the operational air quality forecast service.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting and leading research and development of the Met Office air quality modelling capability.
  • Monitoring, interpreting and communicating air quality forecasts to customers.
  • Disseminating results via academic papers, project reports and oral and poster presentations.


Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. A good background in a physical science or maths: Honours degree (2.2 or above) plus PhD or equivalent experience and several years relevant postdoctoral research experience.
  2. Knowledge of tropospheric meteorology and tropospheric pollutants and chemistry and a detailed understanding and experience of tropospheric composition modelling in atmospheric numerical models.
  3. Significant experience of running, testing and of achieving scientific goals with computer models (e.g. performing significant numbers of simulations/complex analysis)
  4. Extensive scientific programming skills (e.g. in Fortran, Python and UNIX scripting). For example:  making large code changes, writing significant programmes in collaboration with colleagues, ensuring code quality assurance and following change management processes.
  5. Proven ability to communicate clearly and confidently, both orally and in writing, e.g. writing reports or papers and presenting to varied audiences.
  6. Proven ability to work flexibly as part of a team and support other team members. Ability to respond to changing priorities at short notice. 


Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Experience of Met Office code management tools, code quality assurance and systems development best practice.
  2. A background in, or demonstrated interest in, air quality modelling and research.
  3. Evidence of establishing and maintaining collaborations.

 The successful job holder will be expected to travel in the UK due to the collaborative and community nature of the subject area. Additional overseas travel will also be possible.
