Windstorm Specialist Job Vacancy at WTW - Mumbai

Role

We are looking for a Windstorm Specialist to join Willis Towers Watson (WTW) Model Research and Evaluation (MR&E) team in Mumbai. We are seeking an individual with academic and/or industry experience related to wind perils and/or the vulnerability of buildings to wind. The role would involve contributing to the assessment of windstorm catastrophe models.

Catastrophe modelling plays a key role in the reinsurance industry helping to determine the capital and ultimately reinsurance requirements of (re)insurance companies. The models used in the industry are imperfect, and it is very important to understand their weaknesses, as well as develop adjustments to correct their more significant biases.  The role of model research and evaluation is expanding, as more data becomes available, more models are built, regulation makes stricter demands on model users and generally the sophistication of models increases. The individual we are seeking would be involved in all stages of model research and evaluation from studying the models, to adjusting biases and producing evaluation reports and documentation.

Core Responsibilities

  • The main responsibility is evaluation and assessment of catastrophe risk models related to atmospheric perils – tropical cyclones, extra-tropical cyclones & severe thunderstorms. This involves an in-depth understanding and potential adjustment of different catastrophe model components.
  • Working with MR&E colleagues in London to deliver Catastrophe Risk Management services to clients and prospects
  • Design, plan, carry out and coordinate model sensitivity analyses for different territories (world-wide coverage)
  • Ensure a rapid response for model version change tests and interpretation, as a basis for client-specific model change management work carried out within the commercial application areas
  • Help standardise existing model evaluation methods
  • Build and maintain a library of outputs for instant use by analysts and brokers
  • Write reports of different level of complexity and create presentations
  • Utilise Willis Research Network (WRN) (and other) scientific output for model evaluation
  • Liaison with offices and teams world-wide and participate in business-travels that may be required
  • The role may develop to also include development and evaluation of in-house catastrophe models

Minimum requirements

  • Masters level degree in atmospheric science (meteorology), Climate Sciences, civil engineering or environmental science; other closely related scientific, mathematical and engineering degrees will also be considered
  • Strong analytical skills – the candidate should be able to demonstrate where they have successfully analysed complex problems either in their past work or during their education
  • Programming experience (ideally in R/Python/Matlab)
  • High level of competence with MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English

Preferred

  • PhD level degree in atmospheric science or equivalent degree/experience in wind vulnerability
  • Knowledge of catastrophe modelling
  • Strong statistical skills
  • A good understanding of relational databases and some experience using SQL
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), particularly ESRI
  • Direct experience of at least one of the main catastrophe modelling software: AIR and RMS (Not Required/Mandatory)

Interested candidates may send/forward their CVs as soon as possible to Dr. Mahesh Shinde (Mahesh.Shinde@WillisTowersWatson.com) and Shivmala Jagtap (Shivmala.Jagtap@WillisTowersWatson.com). Only Indian nationals can apply.
