[Met-jobs] Postdoctoral Scholar position in ocean/climate data science (Ocean Sciences Department, UCSC)

From Claudie Beaulieu <>
Date Thu, 15 Aug 2019 12:35:01 -0700

The Ocean Sciences Department ( at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar. Under the direction of Dr. Claudie Beaulieu (, the Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to research that aims to quantify climate and marine change and variability, determine the underlying causes and assess the potential impacts on regional climate and marine ecosystems. Our approach is data-driven and based on the development and application of statistical approaches for interpreting a suite of observational datasets and model outputs. We are primarily interested in researchers who can incorporate ideas and tools from statistical modeling and inference to answer fundamental questions in ocean and climate change.

There is considerable flexibility regarding specific questions to be examined and potential areas of focus may include:

  • detection of abrupt changes in climate data;
  • fusion of observations and model outputs to quantify trends and uncertainty in ocean data;
  • detection and attribution of changes in extremes and variability;
  • and/or assessment of ocean monitoring strategies in terms of their efficiency and accuracy for quantifying long-term change.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be responsible for identifying compelling scientific questions, design and conduct high-level research and collaborate with other members of the Ocean and Climate Data Science Group on topics based on the candidate’s strengths and interests and related to the broad areas defined above. The Postdoctoral Scholar is expected to lead and contribute to research papers to be published in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants with strong quantitative skills and experience with scientific programming in R, Matlab and/or Python, and with experience in data analysis, particularly handling large data-sets, are strongly encouraged to apply. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills is essential.

How to apply:

Submit a one-page statement of research experience and interests, a CV and contact information for three references to Dr. Claudie Beaulieu at Please refer to Position JPF00730.

Full consideration will be given to applications completed by August 30th. Applications received after this date will be considered if the position has not been filled.
