[Met-jobs] PhD studentship in SEVIRI Cloud Imaging and Tracking at Leipzig University

The Leipzig Institute for Meteorology at Leipzig University, Germany, offers a fully funded three-year PhD studentship starting on 1 January 2020.

The position will be within the project PACIFIC funded by the German Academic Exchange Service’s Make Our Planet Great Again - German Research Initiative (

You will develop methodologies for tracking clouds and cloud fields in MSG-SEVIRI images. These tools will be used by you and the other PACIFIC team members to study aerosol effects on clouds by linking satellite observations from geostationary and polar-orbiting platforms. This novel information will be used to investigate the effects of changes in aerosol concentration on the properties of clouds.

Applicants should have a completed Master’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, physics or related fields at the start date of the announced positions. The work will include scientific programming, e.g. using MatLab or Python, the presentation of research findings at international conferences and workshops, and the publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is mandatory. The salary level will be according to the German public service regulation (TV-L 13, 75%).
