Job Title: Marine Forecaster
Reports to: Weather Forecasting Operations Manager
The Weather Forecasting department within the Monitoring and Forecasting Service Line is responsible for providing reliable weather forecast services to our clients to enable efficient planning and informed decision making across multiple industry sectors including renewables, media, construction and oil and gas.
The department is now seeking a Marine Weather Forecaster to be based in our Wallingford, Oxfordshire office to report to the Departmental Operations Manager. This is an exciting opportunity as you will not only get to work in a client facing role where you are the first point of contact for our clients, but you will also be actively encouraged to take part in innovation, offering you significant influence over research and development activities. The department operates a 24 hour / 7 day a week service, so this role will require you to work shift patterns across both day time and night time shifts. Whilst we cannot guarantee particular hours, we do try to accommodate individual preferences as much as possible. The role is based in Wallingford, but you will be providing forecasts for multiple regions across the globe and will be required to work offshore from time to time.
The duties and responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to the following:
o Team leader for the shift;
To maintain the highest standards of all-weather Forecasting services and to be supported by Fugro’s own in-house modellers, assistant forecasters and day staff;
Preparation and approval of marine weather forecasts for offshore operations and land-based forecasts as necessary;
Maintain meteorological watch over all locations /areas for which forecasts are being produced;
Check all forecasts and initiate contact with Clients as necessary in case of severe weather threat;
Deal with client queries both via email and over the phone in a timely and professional manner;
Assisting the Manager Metocean Forecasting in undertaking meteorological reports, climatological and hindcast studies as required;
Once offshore qualified and from time to time, you will form part of an offshore management team and assist our clients and their clients in all aspects of meteorology and oceanography in relation to the offshore task.
o A first or second class science based degree in Meteorology / Climatology or Oceanography;
o In some cases a MSc in Meteorology may be acceptable, dependent upon the first degree subject.
o The 4 year Applied Meteorology course from Reading University.
Skills & Experience
o Ability to work to schedules and to understand a variety of weather situations around the world;
o Significant weather forecasting experience in a client facing role in a Marine Forecasting Environment;
o Good problem solving abilities;
o Ability to manage information;
o Ability to make sound decisions and prioritise;
o Ability to work within a team;
o Basic scripting skills (Python);
o Understand the importance of working with a quality environment.
