PhD position in atmospheric modelling
The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research team of the project URBAG funded by the ERC Horizon 2020, under the supervision of Gara Villalba (PI) and a postdoctoral fellow. The candidate is expected to perform research towards the completion of the various tasks assigned and work cooperatively with the rest of the team. The main objective of this PhD thesis is to determine how various forms of green infrastructures affect the urban atmosphere in terms of temperature, pollutants and GHG concentrations, by using the atmospheric Weather Research Forecasting model (WRF) coupled with Chemical transport (WRF-Chem).
The candidate will use the atmospheric Weather Research Forecasting model (WRF) coupled with
Chemical transport (WRF-Chem) in order to simulate GHG emissions and pollutant concentrations at urban scale at the 1000 and (later) 500 meter resolution. The candidate will use the appropriate land Surface model (LSM) and urban canopy model (UCM) to compute
surface fluxes and temperature for vegetated areas.
This PhD thesis aims to improve our scientific understanding of the impact of the urban biosphere
on the net flux of CO2
from cities into the atmosphere.
Using the city of the Oslo and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona as case studies, the candidate will work with the rest of the team to answer the question: What combinations of green infrastructures result in best performance in terms of air quality, temperature, and the carbon footprint of the city?
The overall objective is to analyze the direct effects of vegetation and urban agriculture on the urban and regional atmosphere. The student will work in a multidisciplinary and transversal way with the rest of the team, so that an integrated analysis will be generated to support policy in terms of sustainable urban planning and management to promote a more resource-efficient city.
The researcher will be required to do training activities during the project, to amplify his/her capacity to work in a multidisciplinary environment, such as observation/measurement techniques,.
Additionally, the Post-Graduate program at the UAB offers training opportunities for both postdocs and PhD students, such as courses in scientific writing, GIS tools, and statistical methods.
If no candidate reaches the mínimum qualification of 70%, the position will be left deserted.
