Scientist - starting salary £30,325 with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £33,260 pa pro rata.

Senior Scientist - starting salary £36,684 with opportunities to progress within the role up to the maximum of £40,352 pa pro rata.

This is initially a two-year contract which may develop into a permanent position.

The focus of the Business Group, our commercial area, is to make the best possible use of our world-leading weather and climate science to ensure our customers can use forecast information in their decision making effectively. At the heart of this is our Post-Processing Applications team, working with our customers to understand the challenges they face and researching and developing bespoke forecast capabilities to solve these critical industry problems. We seek to recruit self-motivated and enthusiastic scientists to develop new services to meet our surface transport customers’ needs.

You will develop an excellent understanding of how weather information is used in the surface transport industry across the road, rail and aviation sectors. Your work will combine this with your relevant scientific or technical background to research and deliver a next generation surface transport forecasting capability that supports both existing Met Office customers and new opportunities in the fast-moving Connected and Autonomous Vehicle sector.

Job Purpose:

You will work with science, technology and business teams on the development and delivery of a new surface transport forecasting system: exploiting the Met Office's scientific and technical capability to enhance models of the Earth’s surface over different surface types, including the impacts of traffic and local characteristics, and how these can provide timely and relevant information to end users. You will investigate how to exploit cloud computing technologies to build scale and efficiency into our operational services and support emerging applications for the Future of Mobility sector, including connected and autonomous systems.

Job Responsibilities:

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who has a relevant scientific or technical background and is passionate about applying their expertise to create forecasting solutions for the surface transport industry. Your work will include a variety of research related activities, including:

  • Research new and improved physical or statistical post-processing techniques that enable the development of valued-added forecasting services for the surface transport industry.
  • Design and develop operational data services exploiting cloud computing technologies to efficiently produce forecasts.
  • Work directly with stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure that forecast services fully meet their needs.
  • Collaborate with a motivated team to deliver a project that underpins the Met Office’s responsibility to support national infrastructure operations.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. A background in a quantitative scientific discipline including postgraduate or equivalent experience demonstrating an ability to apply scientific analysis and mathematical skills to a research problem.
  2. An effective team player with the ability to work and collaborate as an active and productive member of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver projects including the provision of scientific/technical advice to other team members.
  3. Practically applied knowledge and experience in numerical or statistical modelling.
  4. Excellent scientific computing skills (e.g. in Python) and demonstrated ability to learn and apply software tools and/or programming languages including experience of writing and modifying complex code and producing high quality analyses.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Evidence of leading the development of computational physical or statistical models from broadly defined concept to high quality implementation; particularly of operational systems.
  2. Demonstrated experience of data science or developing in a cloud computing environment or willingness to learn.
  3. Experience of developing physical models relating to the weather or similar complex physical problems, particularly the behaviour of surface interfaces with the weather.

Whilst this is a two-year fixed term appointment there is the potential for it to develop into a permanent position.
