[Met-jobs] PhD student opportunity in ocean modeling and scientific computing
I attach an opportunity for a PhD student to engage in global ocean modeling and scientific computing. The student will jointly enroll in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Program in Scientific Computing, at the University of Michigan (U-M). The project is DOE-funded, and the student will be jointly supervised by Drs. Phillip Wolfram and Andrew Roberts of Los Alamos National Lab (LANL). We will be inserting tides into the DOE MPAS-Ocean model, following the successful insertion of tides into other 3-D circulation models such as HYCOM, MITgcm, MOM6, and NEMO. The unstructured grid of MPAS-Ocean will provide an excellent opportunity to quantify potential changes in coastal and estuarine regions over the next 50-100 years. The U-M Scientific Computing training, and the close collaboration with LANL scientists, is expected to produce a professional familiar with both ocean science and computational science. There is an identified need for such professionals at ocean modeling centers around the world.
