[Met-jobs] [U. Edinburgh UK] PDRA using satellite and in situ data to quantify fossil fuel emission of CO2

I am advertising a new 34-month PDRA post to understand how to use satellite and ground-based observations of CO2 and co-emitted tracers (e.g. formaldehyde, CO) to quantify European fossil fuel emissions of CO2 (ffCO2). The successful candidate will also help to understand how upcoming missions (e.g. MicroCarb and Copernicus CO2 service) will influence our ability to verify sub-national ffCO2 estimates. The funded position is part of a wider H2020 consortium called VERIFY.

You will be a highly qualified and self-motivated individual who will be able to help refine the underlying research questions, to develop tools to address those questions, and to deliver key scientific deliverables. You will also be expected to present your results to the VERIFY consortium and to the wider scientific community.

The project will use the nested GEOS-Chem atmospheric chemistry transport model in conjunction with an ensemble Kalman filter. Experience with GEOS-Chem is not essential but the successful candidate will have experience in developing and using a global 3-D chemistry transport model, interpreting remotely sensed data, and Bayesian inversion methods. Knowledge of FORTRAN and Python computer languages are essential.

At the University of Edinburgh, you will join a group of researchers that study various aspects of Earth’s atmospheric composition: http://www.palmergroup.org.

The post is full time for 34 months. The anticipated start date is August/September 2019.

Please contact Mungo McTavish (mungomctavish@gmail.com) with any informal questions about the post.
