Exeter Climate Systems (XCS)
Department of Mathematics
University of Exeter, UK

We are inviting applications for a PhD studentship supervised by myself in collaboration with the Met Office.

Project:
"Statistical post-processing of ensemble forecasts of compound weather risk"

The project is advertised under the EPSRC DTP (Research Theme: Statistical science).

This PhD project is about developing and applying advanced statistical methods to improve ensemble weather forecasts. A special emphasis will lie on extreme weather events and multivariate techniques.

Candidates should have a keen interest in the application of mathematics and statistics in weather and climate science; prior knowledge in numerical weather prediction and statistical post-processing is not necessary. Experience in programming is desirable but not essential. Backgrounds such as mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science or meteorology would all be acceptable.

Start date: September 2019

Duration: Three and a half years

Application deadline: Monday 13 May 2019
