Job Overview

This position is within Guy Carpenter’s Model Development Team (MDT). MDT is a multi-disciplinary unit that develops new tools and products to help our clients better manage their risk.  Since our formation in 2005 we have built models for a wide range of natural and man-made perils in all parts of the globe.  Our clients use our models as part of their day-to-day risk management, to support the pricing and placement of reinsurance, and as part of their standard regulatory reporting.  In addition to catastrophe models, we build a range of other products to assist our clients to manage their underwriting and accumulation management challenges, and we advise clients in other areas as subject matter experts.

The candidate’s responsibilities will cover two broad areas: the first is to support the GC’s web-based portfolio and risk management platform. The platform is used by GC clients to manage their portfolios in relation to natural and man-made risk.  The second area is to contribute to our development stream of risk models and other products as a GIS expert.

The position is based in London and will also have some management responsibilities overseeing workload of a GIS consulting team based in India.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the GIS products for the GC’s web-based platform
  • Contributing to the technical development of natural hazard and man-made risk products with the support of the GIS consulting team based in India
  • Coordinating the specification and development of products with the requesting internal clients and coordinating their implementation with the platform developers based in Hoboken, NJ, USA
  • Providing solutions such as implementation of new real time data feeds, modification of existing workflows to fit new requests, etc.
  • In cooperation with the MDT, contribute as GIS expert to the development of new products and solutions for portfolio risk management
  • Generating products for portfolio management and underwriting
  • Implementing automated procedures for Catastrophe Response

Requirements

Required

  • Master Degree or PhD in Natural Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Informatics, Geo-Informatics, or other relevant disciplines
  • Advanced user of ArcGIS, QGIS, PostgreSQL + PostGIS
  • Expertise in automating GIS procedures using Python scripting
  • Experience in managing GeoServer or other web-map technologies

Desirable

  • Development using R and RShiny
  • Knowledge of software deployment and version control systems
  • Knowledge of scalable and high-performance spatial data processing, querying and warehousing
  • Experience with MS Office: Excel, Access
  • Experience with FME
