African SWIFT and YESS International Summer School 2019: APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN
We invite you to apply for a place on an exciting two-week Summer School on Tropical Meteorology over West and East Africa taking place at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, from 21 July – 2 August 2019. The Summer School is organised by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) African Science for Weather Information and Forecasting Techniques (SWIFT) programme (africanswift.org), and the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) Community.
You will be taught by international experts in the field of tropical meteorology, from both academia and operational centres across the world. Daily lectures in African meteorology will cover a wide variety of themes, and will be followed by practical sessions and daily weather forecast discussions giving a hands-on learning experience. All activities are specifically designed to build your technical forecasting skills. The Summer School will provide a unique opportunity to interact with experts and learn alongside peers, and so form lasting working relationships.
By the end of the Summer School, it is anticipated that all students will have:
• an improved understanding of weather phenomena in West and East Africa;
• the knowledge to apply and understand analysis techniques to characterise and understand high impact weather (HIW) over Africa;
• first-hand experience of different forecasting techniques;
• an appreciation of the stakeholder’s perspectives;
• and improved career skills such as leadership, teamwork, presenting, networking, and international collaboration.
