We are offering a three year post-doctoral Research Associate position in the
Climate System group at CEH Wallingford to evaluate observed and modelled
land-atmosphere interactions.

You will use satellite Earth observation and other datasets to characterise
relationships between the land surface and the atmosphere that affect the
seasonal cycles and variability of regional climate systems, particularly the
East Asian monsoon. You will develop metrics from this research and will use
them to study the performances of a range of weather forecast and climate
models.

A major part of the work will contribute to the PORCELAIN project
(https://www.ceh.ac.uk/porcelain), a collaboration with the University of
Reading, as part of a UK-China programme to improve weather forecast and
climate models. There will also be opportunities to work on other related
research projects elsewhere in the world.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a research-focused, multidisciplinary
group with a strong track record of publication in the highest ranking
journals. As a Research Associate you will receive training to further a
career in scientific research.

Main duties:

* develop and apply new techniques that use Earth observation data to
quantify key land-atmosphere interactions
* integrate these methods into software model evaluation tools
* use these techniques to evaluate weather forecasting and climate models
* provide quality controlled climate scenarios based on historical
measurements and future projections for UK impacts assessment
* write peer-reviewed scientific papers describing research results
* present these results at national and international conferences
* collaborate with project partners in the UK and overseas.

Applicants must have at least a 2.1 Degree in either the physical sciences or
mathematics, plus a PhD in a numerate discipline, ideally meteorology or
atmospheric physics.

The closing date for applications is 7th November 2018.
