Role synopsis

The Market Analysis team is primarily responsible for providing analysis of Global LNG and European Gas & Power markets to the trading and origination teams within the International Gas (IG) business and the wider IST organization. Analysis performed by the team provides commercial value by keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying fundamental views that affect the markets.

This role involves providing weather insight across these markets, throughout IST and BP Group.

Key accountabilities

  • Generate a daily view of weather forecasts for coming two weeks across key geographies
  • Translate both the internally and externally generated weather forecasts into a clear outlook, articulating risk factors
  • Develop trading recommendations based on analysis
  • Work with BP meteorologists in other geographies to form a view of global weather
  • Hold a view of and regularly communicate global seasonal forecasts
  • Provide support to wider analytics team, running models and giving regular input to supply and demand forecasts
  • Monitor market place for new weather products and hold relationship with external weather vendors
  • Provide Subject Matter Expertise on EMEA meteorology and climatology applications to BP Group

 

Essential Education

A degree or equivalent in meteorology or a similar discipline

Essential experience and job requirements

  • Deep interest in the weather and knowledge of global weather patterns and drivers
  • Skill with using global weather models and knowledge of their limitations
  • Particular experience of European and Asian weather forecasting (South America and North America are desirable)
  • Experience working within the energy markets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Independent thinker; creative in finding alternative solutions
  • Confident at presenting in front of a diverse audience
  • Can-do approach to delivering results; able to deal with conflict and field critical questioning
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic trading environment
  • Commercial focus and reputation for commercial delivery

Desirable criteria & qualifications

  • Experience of Marine Forecasting
  • Proficient with Excel and Python programming
  • Demonstrable history of continually improving technical processes, models and systems by drawing on multiple methodologies and wide networks to solve problems
  • Knowledge, with experience of European Gas and Power markets specifically
  • Knowledgeable about other energy commodity markets, such as emissions, coal and oil and the impact the weather can have on these
