AfricaWeather, a subsidiary of Weather Intelligence Systems, is seeking a qualified meteorologist to be based at our Johannesburg office in Lonehill. AfricaWeather is the leading commercial weather provider for the continent and are leaders in innovative weather solutions from aviation, to mining through to the transport sector. The role would suit anyone who has at least one year operational forecasting experience and would like a new and exciting challenge forecasting for clients in Africa, Australia and Antarctica.


Duties of the forecaster typically include:


  • Analysis of evolving weather patterns.

  • Preparing interpretative scripts and commentaries.

  • Producing weather forecasts.

  • Producing graphical products as required by clients.

  • Meet routine deadlines for all meteorological tasks specified in daily task list.

  • Quality controlling all AfricaWeather meteorological data.

  • Review products being produced by AfricaWeather meteorologists for clients.

  • Provide meteorological briefing services to clients as requested.

  • Continuously monitor weather patterns as they evolve and identify newsworthy features of these systems.

  • Ability to manage time and complete all daily tasks on time.

  • Ensure all data that leaves AfricaWeather to clients has been quality controlled in accordance with procedures.

  • Deliver interviews that are tailored to specific audiences as necessary.

  • Deliver custom briefings to clients based on their requirements in a timely manner.

  • Forecasting for a wide variety of clients such as rail companies and insurance companies around Africa, Antarctica and Australia.

  • Creating social media content and taking occasional calls from the media.

  • Liaising and assisting with sales - the candidate will not be involved directly in the sales process but will be expected to assist in sales proposals in terms of providing a scientific background.


Minimum qualifications and experience required:


  • Degree matching the WMO standard of "Meteorologist", that is that the applicant meets the requirements of the Basic Instruction Package (BIP).

  • Meteorological training from a national meteorological organisation.

  • 1 years experience as an operational meteorologist.

  • Ability to self manage workload.

  • The ability to work under pressure during times of severe weather.

  • Intermediate computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite of products.

  • Willingness to work shifts.


Desirable qualifications and experience required:

  • 3 years experience as an operational meteorologist.

  • Experience of aviation weather forecasting.

  • Basic IT coding knowledge.
