Please circulate our position advertisement for 2 PhD student positions in
Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Modelling

The Institute of coastal research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites
applications for two 3-year PhD student positions (m/f) in Marine and Coastal
Ecosystem Modelling. The place of employment is Geesthacht, Germany.

Coastal and shelf habitats exhibit high variability and are subject to strong
anthropogenic stressors. Especially for the ecological state of near-shore
systems, mechanisms of seasonal variability and the sensitivity to stressors
remain unknown. The two positions will focus on specific aspects suggested as
key for understanding the dynamics and sensitivity of coastal ecosystems:
(1) Trophic cascade: To what degree is the spatial distribution of coastal
phytoplankton and its late summer and winter dynamics determined by carnivorous
predators such as jellyfish? The idea of this study is to implement different
trait-based model descriptions for the trophic cascade and to compare their
results with existing observations.
(2) Benthic fauna: To what extent are shallow water ecosystems influenced by
life at the seafloor, such as through bioturbation or suspension feeding? And
how is the spatio-temporal distribution of benthic fauna in turn controlled by
the pelagic ecosystem?
Both studies also aim at generating scenarios for the response of the
subsystems to major anthropogenic stressors such as changes in eutrophication
or construction of offshore windfarms.
