Pending approval of external funding, the Meteorological Institute of the University of Bonn invites applications for 3 positions starting
January 2019 within the Priority Programme 2115 „Fusion of Radar Polarimetry and Numerical Atmospheric Modelling Towards an Improved Understanding of Cloud and Precipitation Processes“ (PROM).
See <https://www2.meteo.uni-bonn.de/spp2115> for more information on PROM and a list of job postings within the priority programme. The list will
be completed in the following weeks, 3 vacancies in Bonn are already posted:

1) A PostDoc position is designed to exploit weather radar polarimetry for quantitative process and numerical atmospheric model evaluation (COSMO/ICON). The successful candidate will closely collaborate with a research scientist at the German Weather Service (DWD) in the same project developing an efficient polarimetric forward operator as a fundamental prerequisite for the model evaluation. The successful candidate in Bonn will use this operator to evaluate and improve the
representation of hydrometeor types and sizes in the atmospheric model.

2) A PhD position aims at improving cloud and precipitation schemes in atmospheric models via the exploitation of weather radar polarimetry. The role of ice generation, snow formation via aggregation, snow melting falling, and rain evaporation below the melting layer on precipitation generation will be investigated using the polarimetric C-band radar network of the German Weather Service (DWD). The successful candidate will closely collaborate with a colleague at the University of Leipzig making use of the polarimetric process information for the evaluation and improvement of parameterizations in the ICON general circulation model.

3) A PhD position is designed to exploit existing and novel in-situ measurements in the dendritic growth layer (at temperatures between -10 and -15°C) and below to evaluate hypotheses on the origin of polarimetric signatures at these atmospheric levels, to evaluate state-of-the-art polarimetric retrievals and to develop a discrimination algorithm between aggregation and riming processes based on polarimetric weather radar measurements only. The successful candidate will closely
collaborate with a colleaque at the university of Mainz analyzing the in-situ aircraft measurements (e.g. Falcon).

Interested candidates should send a CV, a cover letter describing motivation, background, training, and research interests, certificates, and the contact information of two persons, which can be asked for references, as a single PDF of less than 5MB to <silke.troemel@uni-bonn.de>.

The deadline for all applications in PROM is 15 September 2018.
