Employed by the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences, University of Southern Queensland, this position will be based in the UK, working
at the UK Met Office in Exeter, developing the next version of the global atmospheric Unified Model, as part of a wider Global Coupled (GC) system, to be used by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and in further use in climate applications research and development
at the Centre for Applied Climate Sciences, USQ.
You will work in a team to improve the basic science and operational skill of seasonal, sub-seasonal (multi-week) and multi-year climate forecasting systems of
direct relevance to the northern Australia livestock grazing industry as part of the Northern Australia Climate Program (NACP).
Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and meet necessary security clearances to work with our UK partner (Met Office).
What you’ll do
Reporting to the Director (Centre for Applied Climate Sciences) and supervised by senior scientists and managers from the UK Met Office, you will work within the Met Office Global Model Evaluation and Development (GMED) section and in close collaboration with Met Office Hadley Centre’s Monthly to Decadal Prediction team, you will:
· Characterise model systematic errors in sub-seasonal to seasonal and multi-annual mean climate and variability/teleconnections relevant for predictability over northern Australia (e.g. MJO, ENSO, QBO, role of tropical convection, errors along Teleconnections pathways);
· Contribute to the development and application of process based diagnostic techniques and numerical experiments to shed light on fundamental sources for model systematic error growth (e.g. detailed budget studies of model physics increments and their role in forcing local and remote circulation biases; nudging techniques to study the role of remotely forced errors on northern Australian seasonal predictability);
· In collaboration with the Met Office ‘model development teams’ and Monthly to Decadal teams, pull through and evaluate parameterization and dynamics developments into the new GC model versions; GC4 for 2018-2019 and GC5 for 2020-21;
· Manage the completion of project reporting tasks, such as project proposals, progress and final reports and other tasks related to the management of the research project; and
· Seek out opportunities for the communication of the research results and products to stakeholders, the public, and scientists, including through research seminars, conference presentations, written technical reports, and scientific journal articles.
