PhD position at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand)

Clouds and aerosols play an important role in the Earth’s radiative balance, however the interactions between them, and implications for the atmospheric energy balance, are highly uncertain. The current generation of climate models simulate substantial biases in clouds and aerosols in the Southern Ocean/Antarctic region. We are seeking a PhD student to work on modelling aerosol-cloud interactions. The project work will be mostly computational, however the work may offer opportunities for travel to Antarctica, or involvement on ship deployments in the Southern Ocean.

The successful candidate will hold a Masters or BSc Honours degree in chemistry, physics, mathematics or a related discipline e.g. environmental science. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are essential. Programming experience, e.g. in Python, Matlab, R or Fortran, is highly desirable.

This studentship will be jointly supported by Dr Laura Revell and Dr Adrian McDonald at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. (See: <>, <> and <>).

Applicants should submit an academic transcript, cover letter, CV and the names of two academic referees before the deadline. Candidates with strong academic records will be eligible for a UC doctoral scholarship and externally funded PhD scholarships will also be available.

Deadline to apply: Friday 27 July 2018 at 17:00 (NZST).
