The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

The section Physics of the Atmosphere at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany, invites applications for the position of a

PostDoc in Climate Modelling

with a focus on the Arctic climate system

Project description
Arctic climate changes appear faster than in other regions of the world, but individual feedback mechanisms and their contribution are still under debate. We are interested in a better understanding of the individual contributions of atmospheric circulation, atmospheric boundary layer and cloud processes to recently observed Arctic climate change.

This position is funded by the Helmholtz Climate Initiative REKLIM (Regional climate change) (www.reklim.de/) and associated with its Topic 1 on “Coupled regional climate models”. This research topic aims at the development of coupled Earth system models for applications of the regional scale.

Job description
The candidate will setup the atmosphere model ICON (Icosahedral Nonhydrostatic) with grid refinement for the Arctic. The work will include decadal-long simulations and the evaluation of the simulated regional patterns of key atmospheric variables.  Combined with a comprehensive model evaluation, a series of model sensitivity studies with respect to key processes (e.g., vertical mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer, mixed-phase clouds) will help to quantify and improve the associated regional feedback processes in the model.

Requirements:
The position requires a PhD degree in physics, meteorology, oceanography or a related field. Experience in climate modelling and a good knowledge in climate physics and dynamics with a focus on the atmosphere are required. Profound knowledge in scientific programming, and excellent skills in the programming language Fortran and Unix-like operating systems are required. Good English language skills are expected. The applicant is expected to disseminate results on international conferences and in leading scientific journals.

For more information, please contact Dr. Annette Rinke (Annette.Rinke@awi.de).

Employment is limited to two years. There might be an option to extend the position for a third year, depending on potentially upcoming funding. The targeted starting date is October, 2018. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), salary level 13. The place of employment will be Potsdam.

AWI aims to increase the number of women in the scientific staff and therefore encourages women to apply. Disabled applicants will be given preference when equal qualifications are present. The AWI fosters the compatibility of work and family through various means. Because of our engagement in the area of work-life compatibility we have been awarded the certificate “Career and Family”.

Please forward your applications with the standard documentation (cover letter with motivation, CV, publication record) by June 30th, 2018 referencing code 77/G/Kli-P via email (all documents merged into one PDF file) to: personal.potsdam@awi.de
