The Open University is co-leading the NOMAD instrument, which is a spectrometer instrument designed to map trace gases and aerosols in the martian atmosphere as part of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter mission. Through UK Space Agency and Open University funding for a project in collaboration with the University of Oxford, we are offering a 3 year postdoctoral research position to work on martian atmospheric modelling to perform assimilation and back-tracking of potential releases of trace gases detected by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, in collaboration with the NASA InSight mission.
This project is particularly suited to anyone with an interest in terrestrial or planetary atmospheric/climate modelling. In this role, you will focus upon the assimilation of any observed releases of trace gas species and the development of back-tracking techniques using a state-of-the-art global climate model for Mars, to exploit data from the NOMAD instrument which has just started its 2 year primary science mission.
Candidates should have a PhD in planetary science, physics or a closely related field, with knowledge and experience of atmospheric science including numerical programming techniques.
