The UCLA’s department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (https://www.atmos.ucla.edu/) seeks a postdoctoral scholar to support modeling activities of FIREX-AQ, a joint NOAA/NASA field program to better study the atmospheric effects of wildland and agricultural fires in the U.S. Anticipated duties include leading the development, testing, deployment and evaluation of a prediction system to forecast biomass burning smoke that constraints emissions in near-real time using satellite retrievals, coordinating multiple air quality forecasting systems provided by other institutions to support flight planning and perform post-campaign analysis, participating in the field deployment, and supervising graduate and undergraduate students.
Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, or a related field, strong quantitative and programming skills, experience on running air quality models and analyzing their output, knowledge on data assimilation and/or inverse modeling, and strong scientific writing skills.
