Post-doctoral research fellowship at the Marine Research Institute (Ma-Re) University of Cape Town, South Africa
Ma-Re seeks a Research Associate (UCT post-doctoral research fellow) as part of the international project “Humpback Whales in a Changing Climate”, in collaboration with Australia and other South African universities. The candidate will develop the modelling component of the project to study the role of ocean conditions in determining the migratory patterns in the Southern Ocean and along the eastern coast of South Africa. A combination of large scale and regional scale ocean models will be used, in conjunction with ocean biogeochemistry models of various complexity.
The candidates must have experience with the implementation of regional or global ocean numerical models, data analysis and visualization. A publication record of peer reviewed articles pertaining to ocean numerical modelling is required. Prior experience with the use of biogeochemical ocean models is preferred but not necessary. The candidate is expected to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of the Ma-Re multi-disciplinary team under supervision of the PI A/Prof Marcello Vichi, as well as in the framework of the international project.
The candidates must have a completed Ph.D. by appointment start date and be within 5 years from graduation. Appointment is for two years with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, contingent upon satisfactory performance. Salary range is between R300,000 and R400,000 per annum, according to experience. Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are non-taxable, meaning that fellowships must be granted without fringe benefits and no services are required of the successful candidate in return for the fellowship beyond the agreed research activity.
To apply, send an email application to firstname.lastname@example.org and attach the following: a cover letter describing research experience, interests, and collaborative experience; a curriculum vitae; and contact information for two (2) references. Applications will stay open until the position is filled. The first round of (remote) interviews is expected before the end of April 2018 for starting date in August 2018.
