Research Scientific Software Engineer (Job Number:432887)

Description:

Job Description
- The NASA Land Information System team seeks a software engineer to contribute to the development and maintenance of LIS and associated toolkits.
- Key responsibilities include the coordination of the software development across the LIS team; keeping track of software requirements, bug reports, and regression/functional testing; preparation of public releases; and external user support.

Qualifications:
Qualifications

Bachelors and five (5) years or more experience; Masters and three (3) years or more experience; PhD.
- The candidate should have experience in formal software engineering practices, structured programming, object oriented programming, and computing platforms and environments.
- Knowledge of modern revision control systems such as Subversion and Git is required.
- A good knowledge of earth science data formats is expected, and experience in working with satellite datasets is a considered plus.
- The candidate must also be knowledgeable in visualization/analysis packages and software such as GrADS, NCL, IDL, Matlab, and/or GIS. Proficiency is required in writing Fortran 90, C, and Python; working in Linux-based multiprocessor environments; and coding, optimizing, and debugging MPI programs.
- It is desirable that the incumbent has a MS or PhD in computer science, geophysics, hydrology, or related disciplines.
- Experience in building or working with different Earth system components, and familiarity with technologies such as the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) are highly desired.
- The individual should have good communication (written and oral) skills.
- Experience in organizing meetings, project coordination, and writing and reviewing technical reports is also expected.
